NEW ORLEANS – A former African World Studies professor is suing Dillard University after allegedly being improperly fired from a tenured position.
Alan Colon filed suit against Dillard University in the Orleans Parish Central District Court on May 30.
Colon, a tenured professor who had taught at Dillard University for 14 years, claims the university breached its contract with him. On May 25, 2012 he was notified by an administrator that his position had been terminated because his program or concentration was being eliminated.
Colon claims that tenured faculty can only be fired under certain circumstances lined out in the faculty handbook. He claims that the university continues to offer courses in African World Studies but has hired or retained non-tenured faculty to teach.
The plaintiff is seeking an unspecified amount in damages for lost wages.
The plaintiff is represented by Freeman R. Matthews of New Orleans-based Usry, Weeks & Matthews.
The case has been assigned to Division I Judge Piper D. Griffin.
Case no. 2013-05207.
