Disabled woman sues caretakers who allegedly stopped paying homeowner’s insurance and mortgage

GRETNA – A disabled woman is suing an organization that was supposed to pay her bills after they allegedly neglected to pay her mortgage and homeowners insurance before her home was damaged in Hurricane Isaac.

Barbara Madere filed suit against Tammy Johnson and Family Helpers of Greater New Orleans Inc. in the 24th Judicial District Court on Aug. 29.

Madere claims she was the owner of a home located at 120 5th St. in Bridge City and that Family Helpers of Greater New Orleans provided independent living and home health services for her as she is completely disabled. The plaintiff alleges that the defendants were tasked with managing her monthly income and paying her mortgage and homeowners insurance. Madere asserts that before Hurricane Isaac struck her home on Aug. 28 and subsequently the ensuing damages were not covered.

The defendant is accused of failing to timely pay monthly expenses, failing to notify the lack of homeowners insurance and failing to act in the best interest of the plaintiff.

An unspecified amount in damages is sought for late fees and penalties from her mortgage holder, increase in premium costs, inability to repair the property and mental and emotional anguish.

Madere is represented by attorney Meredith A. Mayberry of New Orleans.

The case has been assigned to Division J Judge Stephen C. Grefer.

Case no. 730-545.
