GRETNA – A local hospital is being sued by a woman for medical malpractice after it allegedly mixed up her records and failed to diagnose her with an ectopic pregnancy that eventually led to an invasive emergency surgery.
Delores Penman-Sisson, and husband Keith Sisson, filed suit against Jefferson Parish Hospital Service District No. 2, Parish of Jefferson, State of Louisiana and East Jefferson General Hospital in the 24th Judicial District Court on Sept. 30.
Penman-Sisson asserts that she visited the emergency room at East Jefferson General Hospital with severe lower abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting. The plaintiff claims that the records indicate that she received numerous urine-based pregnancy tests, but she was actually unable to urinate at all due to an ovarian cyst. Penman-Sisson alleges that had a pregnancy test been successfully performed a less invasive surgical method may have been utilized than what was necessitated two months later.
The defendant is accused of failing to diagnose the patient’s ectopic pregnancy, failing to properly document the patient’s urine output and failing to prevent a mix-up of test results.
An unspecified amount in damages is sought for pain and suffering, mental anguish, emotional distress, loss of enjoyment of life, disfigurement, loss of earning capacity and medical expenses.

The case has been assigned to Division D Judge Scott U. Schlegel.
