Southern University sued, accused of negligence by student claiming physical injury

NEW ORLEANS – A college student is suing Southern University and its insurer after allegedly tripping on an iron rod near the school’s recently constructed science building.

Gayl Payton filed suit against Southern University at New Orleans and their insurer in the Orleans Parish Civil District Court on Aug. 29.

Payton claims that she was walking into Southern University's new science building on Aug. 30, 2013 when she tripped and fell over an iron rod jutting out from a piece of concrete near the door. The plaintiff says that she sustained injury to her right knee and hip because of the incident.

The defendant is accused of negligence, including failure to correct dangerous conditions upon their premises.

The plaintiff seeks an unknown amount in damages for all available relief.

The case has been assigned to District D Judge Lloyd J. Medley.
