Family of woman who died at hospital due to heart attack suing for medical malpractice

Hospital west jefferson 1

GRETNA – The family of a deceased woman is suing a doctor and local hospital over her death allegedly due to not being timely treated for a heart attack.

Lynwell Wilson, Jaleesa Wilson and Angel Parker, individually an on behalf of the deceased Pastel Wilson, filed suit against Dr. Katherine Ryan, Jefferson Parish Hospital District No. 1 and West Jefferson Medical Center in the 24th Judicial District Court on Oct. 8.

The plaintiffs contend that on April 19, 2012 Pastel Wilson, who was 49 at the time, went to the emergency room at West Jefferson Medical Center complaining of chest pains and shortness of breath. Pastel Wilson was allegedly suffering from hypertension, fatigue, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, was a smoker and had a family history of coronary artery disease. Upon arriving at the emergency room the plaintiffs claim medical staff did a preliminary examination of Pastel Wilson including an EKG that returned results consistent with heart attack, however, she was sent back to the waiting room instead of being placed on a heart monitor and in a treatment room. The plaintiffs claim thereafter that Ryan, who was the treating physician, failed to examine Pastel Wilson and failed to consult with a cardiologist and Pastel Wilson later collapsed in the waiting room.

The plaintiffs assert that when the true nature of Pastel Wilson’s condition was ascertained she was improperly treated with the incorrect medications and died within an hour after collapsing.

The defendant is accused of medical malpractice.

An unspecified amount in damages is sought for pain and suffering, loss of enjoyment of life, diminished quality of life, survival damages, loss of chance of life, loss of life, mental anguish, emotional distress, medical expenses, succession costs, funeral costs, lost wages and lost income.

The plaintiffs are represented by attorney Sherif K. Sakla of New Orleans.

The case has been assigned to Division B Judge Cornelius E. Regan.

Case no. 743-198.
