Mother of hospital patient sues over trip over electrical cord, claims permanent disability

Unplugged

GRETNA – A mother visiting her son in a local hospital is suing over alleged injuries from a trip and fall over an electrical cord that she claims has left her permanently disabled.

Brenda Thomas filed suit against Ochsner Medical Center Northshore LLC, Ochsner Health Systems and Hill-Rom Company Inc. in the 24th Judicial District Court on Oct. 11.

Thomas contends that she was visiting her son at Ochsner Medical Center Northshore in December 2013 when she tripped and fell over an electrical cord hanging from the bottom of her son’s hospital bed. The plaintiff asserts that in the fall she injured her left shoulder, hip, back and knees.

The defendant is accused of failing to properly assemble the bed, allowing a hazard to exist and failing to warn of a danger.

An unspecified amount in damages is sought for mental anguish, embarrassment, humiliation, physical pain and suffering, medical expenses and permanent disability.

Thomas is represented by Mark W. Smith of Metairie-based Mark W. Smith & Associates PLC.

The case has been assigned to Division B Judge Cornelius E. Regan.

Case no. 743-317.
