Holder files discrimination complaint against nursing college

Attorney General Eric Holder filed a discrimination complaint against a Louisiana nursing college for allegedly denying the application of an HIV-positive student.

Although Holder's last day in office was April 24, a suit bearing his name on behalf of the United States of America, was filed April 27 in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana, against Compass Career Management.

Compass Career College, at 42353 Deluxe Plaza, in Hammond, is cited with discrimination "involving an applicant with HIV to the college's practical nursing program," the lawsuit states.

According to the complaint, "the attorney general has commenced this action based on a determination that a person or group of persons has been discriminated against and that such discrimination raises an issue of general public importance."

The plaintiff cites violation of Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Holder seeks unspecified declaratory and injunctive relief, compensatory damages and a civil penalty, plus costs.

Holder's legal team includes Kenneth Allen Pollite Jr., Vanita Gutpa, Rebecca B. Bond, Eve L. Hills,  Sheila M. Foran, Jana Erickson, Glenn K. Schreiber, Elizabeth Johnson and Anne Langford.
