Restaurant sued for allegedly intercepting pay-per-view signals

NEW ORLEANS -- A pay-per-view provider is suing a local dining establishment for allegedly intercepting programs for their own customers to watch for free.

J&J Sports Productions Inc. filed a complaint on June 23 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana against La Conquistadora Restaurant LLC, doing business as Taqueria Sanchez La Conquistadora, and Carmela Diaz.

According to the lawsuit, the defendant business and owner held a license to sell liquor in Terrebonne Parish and "took steps to unlawfully receive J&J's television signal, which transmitted" a pay-per-view program.

J&J distributes closed-circuit, pay-per-view special events across the United States. According to the suit, Diaz unlawfully intercepted a program for her customers' benefit on March 8, 2014.

The plaintiff seeks statutory damages of $110,000 and $60,000 for two different programs, attorneys' fees and court costs.

The plaintiff is represented by Ronnie J. Berthelot of the Berthelot Law Firm LLC in Baton Rouge.
