SHREVEPORT — An African-American nurse is suing a medical center, alleging violation of civil rights and wrongful eviction.
Theresa Lawson of Springhill, Louisiana, filed a lawsuit March 28, in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Louisiana Shreveport Division against Lifepoint Hospitals Inc. doing business as Minden Medical Center, alleging violations of Title VII if the Civil Rights Act provisions and the Louisiana anti-retaliation statute.
According to the complaint, Lawson was not accepted as a full-time night shift supervisor at Case Management despite her timely application, being qualified and being interviewed by Case Management manager Sheryl Whatley (a white Caucasian).
The plaintiff alleges Minden Medical Center gave the open position to Jamie Malone (a white Caucasian), on the same date Lawson was interviewed. The suit says Whatley informed Lawson she did not receive the position because she interviewed poorly even though Malone was not asked the same questions as the plaintiff concerning night work. Lawson says she was subjected to disparate treatment, discrimination, retaliation and constructive discharge for exercising her rights.
Lawson seeks trial by jury, compensation for all damages, pre-judgment interest, reasonable attorney fees and costs and all other legal and equitable relief she to which she is entitled. She is represented by attorney Fred H. Sutherland of Shreveport.
