OPELOUSAS — A St. Landry Parish customer is suing a Lafayette furniture store, alleging insufficient measures were taken to prevent injuries.

Dolores S. Willis filed a lawsuit May 10 in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Louisiana Lafayette-Opelousas Division against Cost Plus Inc., doing business as Cost Plus World Market, alleging negligence in failing to keep its premises in a reasonably safe condition.

According to the complaint, on March 5, Willis was shopping at the defendant's store No. 6386 in Lafayette, when, without warning, several room dividers fell over, striking her on the right shoulder, knocking her onto the floor, and causing injuries to her face, neck, back, legs, arms and shoulders, as well as a concussion, headaches and memory loss.

The plaintiff alleges the defendant improperly displayed its products, failed to keep the premises free of any hazardous conditions, failed to properly secure the dividers, failed to place warning signs in the hazardous area and failed to train and supervise employees regarding the placement of inventory.

Willis seeks a trial by jury, judgment of more than $2 million, plus interest, legal fees, costs and expenses, and all general relief that can be afforded her by the court. She is represented by attorney Patrick C. Morrow of Morrow, Morrow, Ryan & Bassett in Opelousas.
