Motorist alleges he was rear-ended by sheriff's office vehicle

GRETNA – An individual is seeking damages after a police vehicle allegedly caused a rear-end accident.

Andrae Lampton filed a suit against Devaunta Ashford, Newel Normal in his capacity as Sheriff of the Parish of Jefferson and Direct General Insurance Co. of Louisiana in the 24th Judicial District Court on July 20.

According to the claim, the plaintiff was lawfully stopped on Behrman Highway on Aug. 11, 2015, when the incident occurred. The suit states that the plaintiff's car was struck from behind by the Ashford, who was operating a vehicle owned by the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office.

Ashford is accused of negligence through failing to operate the vehicle in a careful manner, following too closely, failing to keep a lookout for other vehicles, failing to stop and other acts of negligence.

The plaintiff is seeking an unspecified amount in damages. The plaintiff is represented by Amy C. Fontenot, Roderick Alvendia and Jeanne K. Demarest of New Orleans.

The case has been assigned to Division H Judge Glenn B. Ansardi.
