LAKE CHARLES – A deputy and former canine handler for the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office alleges he and other handlers were not properly compensated for all the hours needed to care for the dogs.

Scott Brame filed a class-action complaint on Sept. 8 in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Louisiana, Lake Charles Division against Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office and Tony Mancuso alleging violation of the Fair Labor Standards Act.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that he regularly worked for more than 40 hours per week but was not paid for work performed outside his regular scheduled work at a rate of time-and-one-half his regular rate for the extra hours. The plaintiff holds Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office and Tony Mancuso responsible because the defendants allegedly failed and refused to pay wages for hours worked caring for defendants' canines.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks judgment that defendants' practices violated FLSA, award for damages, plus penalties, liquidated damages, pre- and post-judgment interest, attorney's fees and costs and all other relief to which he may be entitled. He is represented by Somer G. Brown of Cox, Cox, Filo, Camel & Wilson LLC in Lake Charles.
