NEW ORLEANS — A Pennsylvania premier events distributor is suing operators of a New Orleans restaurant, alleging satellite piracy.

Joe Hand Promotions Inc. of Feasterville, Pennsylvania, filed a lawsuit Dec. 4 in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana against Telemar Restaurant LLC, doing business as  a Telemar Restaurante on Tulane Avenue in New Orleans, and Ana Elizabeth Oviedo, alleging violation of the Communications Act.

According to the complaint, on Nov. 21, 2015, Joe Hand Promotions exclusively distributed and broadcast the Miguel Cotto v. Canelo Alvarez middleweight championship fight nationwide that the defendants did not pay for. As a result of defendants' unlawful actions, plaintiff suffered monetary damages, the suit says.

The plaintiff alleges the defendants did not contract the plaintiff and purchase authorization to exhibit the fight in their establishment.

Joe Hand Promotions seeks trial by jury, judgment against each defendant for statutory damages up to $110,000 for violation of 47 U.S.C. § 605, or up to $60,000 for violation of 47 U.S.C. § 553, attorney fees interest, court costs and all other just relief. It is represented by attorney Dorothy L. Tarver of Taggart Morton LLC in New Orleans.
