NEW ORLEANS – An Ascension Parish woman formerly employed as a speech therapist by the St. James Parish School Board alleges she was discriminated against because of her disability.

Jamie Roussel Luquette filed a complaint on Dec. 15 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana against St. James Parish School Board alleging violation of the Title VII of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2000 and that the defendant knew of this when she was hired in 2007. She alleges she was asked by a principal for a log of minutes students missed while she was absent and that this requirement was not asked of other speech therapists. In Feb. 27, 2015, the suit states she was terminated from her employment.

The plaintiff holds St. James Parish School Board responsible because the defendant allegedly failed to provide reasonable accommodations and subjected her to discrimination and adverse terms and conditions of employment because of her disability.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks compensation and punitive damages, litigation costs and expenses and all other relief that the court deems just and appropriate. She is represented by Erin Wiley Lanoux, John S. Troutman and Robert Ryland Percy III of Percy, Lanoux & Mumphrey in Gonzales.
