LAFAYETTE – A former Iberia Parish sheriff’s deputy alleges she was terminated in retaliation for supporting a female co-worker's harassment complaint.
Candace Rayburn filed a complaint on Dec. 16 in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Louisiana, Lafayette Division against Parish of Iberia and Louis Ackal, in his capacity as sheriff, alleging violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act.
According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that on Nov. 15, 2013, she was terminated from her employment as a sheriff's deputy for the defendants. The plaintiff holds Parish of Iberia and Ackal responsible because the defendants allegedly terminated her employment in retaliation for supporting her female co-worker's complaint of sexual harassment. She alleges the action caused her to suffer economic damages, mental anguish, emotional distress and other compensatory damages.
The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks judgment against defendants for damages in an amount within the jurisdictional limits of the court and any other relief, at law or in equity, to which she may be entitled.
