NEW ORLEANS – A seaman has filed a suit seeking millions in damages over alleged injuries he sustained while working aboard a vessel.

Ulysses Levasseur filed a complaint on May 23 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana against CHS Inc. of Minnesota citing the Jones Act.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that on Aug. 26, 2016, he was in the service of defendant's vessel, the M/V Elizabeth Ann, when he was struck and knocked down by a cable. He alleges he sustained severe physical and mental injuries resulting in pain and suffering, disability, impairment of earning capacity and medical expenses. The plaintiff holds CHS Inc. of Minnesota responsible because the defendant allegedly willfully refused to provide maintenance and cure benefits.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks judgment against defendant in the total sum of $2.5 million, plus interest, costs of these proceedings and all other general and equitable maritime relief. He is represented by Berney L. Strauss and Rhett E. King of Strauss & King APLC in New Orleans.
