LSU Law alumna and Louisiana Supreme Court Justice Piper D. Griffin will deliver the LSU Law Class of 2025 Commencement address on Friday, May 16. Commencement exercises will take place at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center on the LSU campus, beginning at 8 a.m.

“We are thrilled to welcome Justice Piper Griffin back to the LSU Law Center as the commencement speaker for this year’s graduation ceremony,” said LSU Law Dean Alena M. Allen. “She has already set an incredible precedent of serving both the bench and the bar. I am certain her address to the Class of 2025 will further inspire the next generation of LSU Law alumni and legal professionals.”

A graduate of the LSU Law Class of 1987, Justice Griffin joined the Louisiana Supreme Court bench on Jan. 1, 2021, serving District 7 and representing portions of both Orleans and Jefferson parishes. She previously served as a judge for the Orleans Parish Civil District Court for nearly 20 years, two of which she served as Chief Judge.

Justice Griffin got her first experience on the bench in 1999 when the Louisiana Supreme Court appointed her to serve as a judge pro tempore to fill an unexpired term on the New Orleans Civil District Court. She practiced law in the New Orleans area for 14 years, focusing on casualty litigation, before joining the bench. She is an active volunteer in her community and has devoted her time to organizations such as the Juvenile Court’s Teen Court program, Greater New Orleans Louis A. Martinet Legal Society, New Orleans Bar Association, and Louisiana Law & Civil Education Association.

“My daily goal, both professionally and personally, is to lead by example with integrity,” said Justice Griffin, who filled the Louisiana Supreme Court seat vacated by retiring Chief Justice Bernette J. Johnson, an LSU Law Class of 1969 graduate. “I aim to inspire those who follow by dedicating my public service to making a difference.”

A lifelong resident of New Orleans, Justice Griffin is a graduate of Xavier University Preparatory School (now St. Katharine Drexel Preparatory School) and the University of Notre Dame. As a student at LSU Law, Justice Griffin served as president of the Black Law Students Association and was involved in many moot court competitions, including being on a team that reached the national finals of the Frederick Douglass Moot Court Competition.
