NEW ORLEANS – A woman claims that she was severely injured at a shelter.

Michelle Salvail filed a lawsuit against New Orleans Mission Inc., Mission Properties Foundation Inc. and ABC Insurance Co. in Orleans Parish Civil District Court, alleging negligence.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff was at the defendants' property at 1130 Oretha Castle Haley in New Orleans on Aug. 9, 2016. The suit states that the plaintiff was injured when the ladder that she claims she was told to use to access her bunk bed detached from the bed, caused her to fall onto her back. The plaintiff had multiple surgeries for her neck and back following the incident, the suit states.

The defendant is accused of negligence by failing to ensure that the venue was safe for guests and failing to warn of danger.

The plaintiff seeks all reasonable damages, court costs, attorney fees and all appropriate relief. The plaintiff is represented by attorney Owen M. Courreges.

The case has been assigned to Division I Judge Piper D. Griffin.
