Man seeks damages after crash involving sheriff's office vehicle

GRETNA –– A motorist blames a sheriff's deputy for hitting his car on U.S. Highway 90 and injuring him.

Jacob Harmon filed a complaint on Sept. 4 in the 24th Judicial District Court against Karl S. Burge, Joseph P. Lopinto III, in his capacity as sheriff of the Parish of Jefferson, and the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office. An unnamed insurance company is also a defendant. 

According to the complaint, Burge's law enforcement vehicle slammed into plaintiff's vehicle on U.S. Highway 90 while trying to make a left. Harmon claims he suffered injuries to his neck, shoulder and back. 

The plaintiff is seeking all reasonable sums due, attorney fees and court costs. He is represented by Mary W. Riviere of Waltz & Downer in Houma.

The case has been assigned to Division L Judge Donald A. Rowan Jr.
