Dickerson tops Floyd for Jefferson Parish School Board seat

There are a few new faces on the Jefferson Parish School Board, where Simeon Dickerson bested two-term incumbent Cedric Floyd for the 5th District seat, according to an Advocate report.

Nola previously reported that Dickerson had sued Floyd during the campaign for spreading misleading and defamatory comments about his arrest record and teaching certification. Floyd's campaign flyer said Dickerson was not qualified to teach public school and Dickerson refuted that by saying he teaches seventh and eight grade. Another flyer said he was arrested and Dickerson's response was that his charges were dropped when officers found his fingerprints were no match for the case.

In the 1990's, Floyd had two terms before losing his school board seat as well, according to the Advocate. He also was a major supporter for the hiring of Isaac Joseph -- the first permanent black superintendent hired by the School Board in 2015.

Floyd did not return calls for a comment to the Louisiana Record about Dickerson's lawsuit.

The Jefferson Parish School Board held its most recent meeting on Feb. 12.
