GRETNA – The State of Louisiana claims it is owed $37,500 from a woman who used a government grant for purposes other than those stated in the agreement.

State of Louisiana Division of Administration Office of Community Development Disaster Recovery Unit filed a complaint against Alma Smith on Feb. 7 in the 24th Judicial District Court. According to the lawsuit, the plaintiff states that the defendant received a balance of $37,500 in the form of a grant that was meant for the purpose of repairing a home. However, the suit claims that the defendant was negligent and misused the balance and is now indebted for $37,500 in sums due.

The state is seeking all reasonable sums due, attorney fees and court costs. The plaintiff is represented by John C. Walsh of Shows, Cali & Walsh LLP in Baton Rouge.

The case has been assigned to Division M Judge Henry G. Sullivan Jr.
