LOUISIANA GOVERNOR'S OFFICE: Gov. Edwards: Louisiana's Unemployment Rate is at an Eleven Year Low

Louisiana Governor's Office issued the following announcement on Sept. 20.

Gov. John Bel Edwards issued the following statement about Louisiana’s unemployment rate of 4.3 percent, which remains lower than it has been in 11 years. In Louisiana, the private sector has added jobs over the year for 18 straight months.

Gov. Edwards said:

“The news that our unemployment rate continues to be at an 11-year low is another sign that our economy is improving and Louisiana is on the right track. The private sector has added jobs over the year for 18 straight months, our state’s GDP and personal income are both the highest on record, and we have the tenth fastest growing economy in the nation, according to federal data."

“Earlier this week, Moody’s upgraded our credit outlook from stable to positive based on our stabilized economy and improved budget picture, with our state going from massive budget deficits to surpluses. We’re finally investing in education again so that we’re better training the workforce for the future and in construction of our roads and bridges, which will not only create jobs in the future but will improve our infrastructure and make us more competitive.”

Facts about Louisiana’s workforce:

Louisiana’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate is 4.3 percent, which is the lowest in nearly 12 years. The state’s not seasonally adjusted rate also dropped.

Louisiana gained 4,800 jobs over the month and added 1,000 jobs over the year. Louisiana nonfarm employment has seen back-to-back over-the-month gains.

Total private employment added 4,000 jobs over the month and 4,000 jobs over there year. Total private employment has added jobs over the year for 18 straight months.

The number of employed people in Louisiana increased over the year by 7,679.

The number of unemployed people in Louisiana decreased over the year by 13,694.

At this point last year, the unemployment rate was 4.9 percent. In January 2016, the unemployment rate was 6.1 percent.
