Louisiana House Speaker Clay Schexnayder, (R-Gonzales) removed two Democrats from their committee positions after they sided with Gov. John Bel Edwards in veto session, according to The Associated Press.
Republicans in Louisiana failed to override Edwards' veto of two bills, including Senate Bill 118, which would allow for concealed carry of guns without a permit and Senate Bill 146, which seeks to ban transgender women and girls participating in women and girls sporting events.
Those removed were Reps. Chad Brown of Plaquemine and Vincent Pierre of Lafayette, according to the AP.
Katie Bernhardt, chair of Louisiana Democratic Party, said Republican House members are "further dividing our state to punish lawmakers who refused to go along with their wasteful partisan stunt. Democrats will continue to focus on the issues that concern Louisiana families."
SB 118 was opposed by law enforcement and 80% of Louisianans, according to a post on LousianaDemocrats.org. The website states that the bill would have allowed anyone 21 years of age and older to conceal carry a firearm in public with no permit or training.
SB 156 would have "cost Louisiana hundreds of millions of dollars—if not billions—in business, tourism and sporting events," according to the post on LouisianaDemocrats.org.
