Louisiana's High Court Rules Unanimous Jury Requirement Not Retroactive

In 2020, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Ramos v Louisiana that nonunanimous verdicts were unconstitutional. Last week, the Louisiana Supreme Court decided that the Ramos decision would not be applied retroactively in Louisiana. In response to the favorable ruling, Attorney General Jeff Landry issued the following statement:

"The Louisiana Supreme Court overwhelmingly made the right decision. Ruling any other way on this issue would have completely crippled our criminal justice system, which is already on life support," said Attorney General Landry. "I'd like to applaud our Solicitor General Liz Murrill and her federalism team for arguing this case and securing this ruling."
