February is Black History Month so let us reflect on the African-American lawyers who paved the way for our community in Louisiana.

A.P. Tureaud, the first African American attorney to have his portrait hung at the Louisiana Supreme Court was a Howard University graduate and native New Orleanian who headed the legal team for the NAACP - New Orleans Branch during the Civil Rights Movement, joining forces with Thurgood Marshall and Robert Carter to successfully end Jim Crow segregation in New Orleans.

His best known case is Brown v. Board of Education which overturned Plessy v. Ferguson, setting the stage for desegregation.

Tureaud is recognized as a legal genius whom many current African American lawyers look to with pride and as a model of professionalism.
