LSU Law alumna Alexis Fetzer Sharp has been appointed by the Supreme Court of Virginia to serve as the next state law librarian of the Virginia State Law Library, effective Nov. 1.

“I am honored and humbled to have been appointed as Virginia State Law Librarian, succeeding Gail Warren in November,” said Sharp. “Ms. Warren leaves behind a great legacy and I am excited and grateful for the challenge of following that legacy.

”Sharp will be just the seventh Virginia state law librarian since the position was created in 1902. She is a three-time LSU graduate, having earned her bachelor’s degree in history in 2008, her J.D. in 2011, and her master’s degree in library and information science in 2013.As an LSU undergrad, Sharp worked in the circulation department of the LSU Law Library. She then served as a legal research instructor and Law Library Fellow at the LSU Paul M. Hebert Law Center while she completed her master’s degree.“We are so proud of all that Alexis has accomplished,” said Melanie Sims, LSU Law Library Head of Access Services and Government Information. “She was always willing to go the extra mile to provide great service and be of assistance during her time at the LSU Law Library.

I know she will be just as dedicated as state law librarian.

”Sharp previously served as a library manager and reference librarian for multinational law firms, and as a reference librarian at the University of Richmond School of Law, where she also taught legal research.“We are pleased to welcome Ms. Sharp as state law librarian and believe that her experience and qualifications will ensure that the Virginia State Law Library’s contributions, to the Court and the Commonwealth, will continue to be exceptional,” Virginia Supreme Court Chief Justice S. Bernard Goodwyn said in a prepared statement.

The Virginia State Law Library is a reference collection serving the research needs of the justices of the Supreme Court of Virginia and their staff, the judges of the Virginia Court of Appeals and their staff, the office of the Governor, members of the General Assembly, judges of other courts, and practicing attorneys in good standing. Paralegals working under the supervision of an attorney and law students also have access to the library.
