Remembering Pope Francis

Dear Loyola Community:

We join millions around the world in mourning the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, a transformative leader whose life of service has left a lasting mark on the world.

Pope Francis was a pope of many firsts.  As the first pope from the Society of Jesus, the Jesuits, the first from the Americas, and the first non-European pope since Gregory III in the 8th century, Pope Francis brought renewed visibility to the Jesuit tradition of faith, intellectual inquiry, and service to others.  By being the first pope to take the name, Francis, he also embraced renewal in the Church and encouraged us to celebrate and honor the gift of creation.  Pope Francis was also the first pope ordained a priest after Vatican II, guiding and encouraging the reforms of that important church council.

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Jorge Mario Bergoglio found his calling to join the Jesuits in 1958 after recovering from a severe illness. His life is a testament to his deep sense of purpose and resilience, and his papacy has been defined by humility, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to the poor and marginalized. Through his teachings and actions, Pope Francis reminded us of the transformative power of God’s mercy and the importance of building a more just and compassionate world.

As a Jesuit institution, we honor Pope Francis for his contributions to the Catholic Church and for the inspiration he has provided to our Loyola community. His example of servant leadership and dedication to social justice resonates deeply with our mission to educate individuals who seek to create positive change in society.

In this time of reflection, we offer our prayers and extend our heartfelt condolences to the global Catholic community. May his legacy continue to guide us as we strive to live out the values he embodied.
