A Southern University student is suing the college after allegedly being attacked in her on-campus apartment.
In the complaint filed Nov. 12 in Orleans Parish District Court, Gloria Chatman contends the Southern University at New Orleans, its Board of Supervisors and Chancellor Victor Ukpolo failed to protect her from being severely injured in a physical attack.
Chatman says the altercation happened on Jan. 18 as she was returning to her on-campus apartment. The student says her roommate and another person confronted her and physically assaulted her. Chatman says she suffered serious injuries, including the loss of one eye.
Chatman says her second attacker did not attend Southern but had been living in university housing. She contends the college was negligent for allowing that to happen and for not enforcing safety and security measures to avoid her being attacked.
She claims the defendants were also negligent for failing to have locked entrances, fencing and security cameras to protect students living on campus.
Chatman is asking for an unspecified amount of money to compensate for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, loss of an eye, disfigurement, loss of enjoyment of life and loss of love and affection.
