Discovery an 'exhausting' process in BP MDL

Langan

The discovery process for the expansive litigation surrounding the 2010 BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is an "intense, multi-track and exhausting" process, a BP attorney said this week.

Andrew Langan spoke on behalf of the oil company at a status conference for the BP oil spill multidistrict litigation taking place in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana.

Langan said that BP alone has handed over two million pages of documents. Depositions of witnesses have also been scheduled so there are anywhere between five and eight taking place per day.

U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier said he recognized the hard work being put in by both plaintiff and defense attorneys.

More than 70 depositions have been completed and 90 are scheduled to take through July 31, with depositions of witnesses in Great Britain occurring concurrently with those being done in New Orleans.

Barbier noted that the federal courthouse in New Orleans has served as an extra space for depositions when rooms ran out at One Shell Square, where most of the New Orleans depositions take place.

The status conference, which is normally scheduled for the last Friday of every month at 9:30 a.m., was pushed back to the last Thursday of May at 8:30 a.m. to accommodate attorneys with scheduled depositions.
