A Louisiana seaman has filed a lawsuit that claims he is suffering from debilitating back injuries after the vessel he was aboard collided into another vessel.
Gerson Velasquez filed suit against Lawson Environmental Services on Sept. 23 in federal court in New Orleans.
The incident occurred on Oct. 10, 2010 as Velasquez was working as a deckhand aboard the M/V Captain Crystal. He states the vessel collided into the rear of a flatboat, which caused him to suffer severe injuries to his back.
The defendant is accused of negligence for failing to provide competent supervision, failing to maintain a safe distance from other vessels, failing to maintain a proper lookout and having an insufficient captain to operate the vessel.
The plaintiff is seeking damages for physical pain and suffering, mental pain and suffering, loss of earnings, medical expenses, disfigurement, loss of enjoyment of life, permanent disability, interest, and court costs.
Velasquez is represented by Stephen P. Bruno of Bruno & Bruno in New Orleans.
