A nurse is suing her former employer after she learned that she was making $4 less per hour than other nurses.

Claiming racial discrimination, Charlotte L. Thomas filed suit against Synergy Inc. on Dec. 22 in federal court in New Orleans.

Thomas was hired by the defendant in September 2010 as a home health licensed practical nurse at an hourly rate of $21 per hour. She states that she was discriminated against because similarly situated white employees were paid at $25 per hour.

According to the complaint, Thomas was harassed by the defendant's employees after she complained about the inequality in pay.

She was terminated Aug. 24, 2011. when her position was eliminated, the suit claims.

The plaintiff is asking the court to prevent the defendants from continued violations of law and for an award of damages for backpay, front pay, loss of earnings, general damages, court costs and expenses, and interest.

Thomas is represented by Thomas J. Hogan Jr. of Hogan & Hogan in Hammond. A jury trial is requested.
