NEW ORLEANS – An East Baton Rouge Parish man has filed suit against 71 defendants who he claims are at fault for his exposure to asbestos.
Johnny Ray Burton filed suit on April 19 against Afton Pumps, Inc; et al. in the Orleans Parish Civil District Court.
Burton claims he contracted lung cancer due to his work as a seaman with the USS Bonne Home Richard, his work as a pipefitter in the Baton Rouge area and for repairs he did to his home and vehicles.
He alleges that all of the defendants are in some way liable for his cancer due to their production, distribution, sale or otherwise handling of asbestos materials.
An unspecified amount in damages is sought for medical costs, lost earnings, mental anguish and physical pain and suffering.
Burton is being represented by Frank J. Swarr of New Orleans-based Landry & Swarr.
The case has been assigned to Division I Judge Piper D. Griffin.
