Winn-Dixie sued after mat allegedly slips out from under customer

GRETNA – A Jefferson Parish woman is suing a grocery store for injuries she claims occurred on their premises.

Ellen Norwood filed suit on May 7 in the 24th Judicial District Court against Winn-Dixie Montgomery LLC. Norwood claims she shopping was shopping at the Winn-Dixie at 3623 Jefferson Highway in Jefferson when she was approaching the cheese display and stepped on a rubber mat that slipped out from underneath her.

The plaintiff alleges she fell backwards and hit her head, hip and arm on the floor. Norwood claims after falling she noticed water on the floor at the spot where the mat had been.

The defendant is accused of failing to provide a safe place to shop, failing to maintain its food display cases, creating a dangerous trap and failing to warn of the danger.

An amount exceeding $50,000 in damages is sought for injuries, physical pain, mental anguish and medical expenses.

Norwood is being represented by Richard J. Garvey, Jr. of New Orleans-based the Didriksen Law Firm.

The case has been assigned to Division G Judge Robert A. Pitre Jr.
