Special election announced for Supreme Court Chief Justice's seat

NEW ORLEANS – Governor Bobby Jindal has called for a special election to be held to replace retiring Supreme Court Chief Justice Kitty Kimball.

The special election will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 6 in the 5th District, which encompasses Baton Rouge and surrounding rural parishes. A runoff election is slated to be held on Dec. 1 if no candidate wins a simple majority in the first vote.

Kimball announced in April that should would be stepping down. She was first elected to the court in 1992 and was sworn in as Chief Justice in 2009. In all, Kimball has spent 30 years as a judge in Louisiana.

No candidates have yet come forth to publicly state their interest in filling the spot.
