Owen Leftwich, M.D.
GRETNA – A Jefferson Parish woman has filed suit against a New Orleans-based opthamologist for injuries she claims occurred when he operated on the wrong part of her face.
Mary M. Pitts filed suit against Owen Leftwich, M.D. in the 24th Judicial District Court on July 13.
Pitts claims Leftwich was a Louisiana state licensed opthalmologist working at Westside Eye Clinic Center and Laser Institute in Marrero when she was scheduled for a temporal artery biopsy in October 2010.
The plaintiff alleges the defendant mistakenly took a biopsy of the facial nerve rather than the artery which resulted in nerve damage that caused a drooping left eyelid. Pitts asserts she underwent additional surgery to repair the damage, but it was unsuccessful.
An unspecified amount in damages is sought for physical pain and suffering, medical expenses, disfigurement, loss of visual field and costs of medical review panel.
Pitts is represented by Al J. Mendoza of the Harvey-based Mendoza Law Firm.
The case has been assigned to Division A Judge Raymond S. Steib.
Case no. 717-011.
