NEW ORLEANS - An Orleans Parish woman has filed a personal injury lawsuit over a surgically implanted medical mesh after she saw a legal advertisement on television, which described the allegedly defective nature of the medical device.

Iris Johnson filed suit against LifeCell on July 6 in Orleans Parish District Court. The defendant removed the case to federal court in New Orleans on Aug. 3.

Johnson claims she underwent incisional hernia repair at Tulane Medical Center on Nov. 11, 2009. During the surgery, Johnson was implanted with LifeCell's Strattice medical mesh device. the suit states.

Several months following the surgery, Johnson developed a seroma and infection of her abdominal wound. She underwent a second surgery in May 2010 to remove the mass infection and the medical mesh.

"Ms. Johnson did not suspect that there had been any defect in the Strattice Mesh until August of 2011, when she viewed a legal advertisement on television regarding allegedly defective surgical mesh," the lawsuit states.

The defendant is accused of products liability, manufacturing defect, defective design, negligence, and redhibition.

The plaintiff is seeking damages for personal injury, pain and suffering, emotional trauma, loss of enjoyment of life, loss of consortium, medical expenses, court costs, and interest.

Johnson is represented by New Orleans attorney Owen M. Courreges.

U.S. District Judge Ivan L. R. Lemelle is assigned to the case.
