Hospital sued by woman claiming injuries in fall on premises during heavy rainstorm

Carlos A. Zelaya, II

GRETNA – A Jefferson Parish woman has filed suit against a local hospital for injuries she claims to have received in a fall during a heavy rainstorm.

Melody Bergeron filed suit against East Jefferson General Hospital Foundation, Jefferson Parish Hospital Service District No. 2 and East Jefferson General Hospital in the 24th Judicial District Court on Aug. 24.

Bergeron claims that she was going to visit a patient at East Jefferson General Hospital located at 4200 Houma Blvd. in Metairie when she entered the hospital and slipped on water accumulated near the entrance. The plaintiff alleges that there was no mat on the floor or signs displaying the hazardous condition although it had been heavily raining for numerous hours. Bergeron asserts that she was injured in the fall.

The defendant is accused of failing to keep its entrance way and floor free of water, failing to post warning signs concerning the present hazard and failing to inspect the premises for hazards.

An unspecified amount in damages is sought for permanent bodily injuries, medical expenses, pain and suffering, mental anguish and emotional distress.

Bergeron is represented by Carlos A. Zelaya, II of Slidell-based Mumphrey Law Firm, LLC.

The case has been assigned to Division J Judge Stephen J. Windhorst.

Case no. 718-577.
