GRETNA – The daughters of a deceased woman are suing a doctor and hospital for her alleged wrongful death.
Christy Buras and Kimberly Buffinet, individually and on behalf of Charlene Dillard, filed suit against Ochsner Health Systems, Inc. and Dr. Faiq Hasan in the 24th Judicial District Court on Oct. 30. Buras and Buffinet claim that their mother Charlene Dillard visited the emergency room at Ochsner’s West bank campus complaining of shortness of breath and wheezing, whereupon she was admitted to the hospital under the care of Hasan. The plaintiffs allege that two weeks after their mother had been admitted to the hospital she began suffering from severe abdominal pain and complaining of shortness of breath for which the defendants only gave her acetaminophen for pain relief. After only a few days Buras and Buffinet claim their mother’s health rapidly declined and her belly was swollen, she vomited and then had to be resuscitated. The plaintiffs claim that only after Dillard was resuscitated that the defendants ordered a CT scan. They claim their mother died two days later from a hemorrhage.
The defendant is accused of failing to provide the proper level of nursing care and supervision of Dillard, failing to observe and care for Dillard under the circumstances, failing to check and monitor Dillard sufficiently, failing to document Dillard’s deteriorating condition, failing to notify Dillard’s family of her condition, failing to timely assess and provide proper treatment, violating the appropriate standard of care and failing to conduct any procedures required under applicable standard of care.
An unspecified amount in damages is sought for wrongful death, physical pain and suffering, anguish, mental pain and suffering, medical expenses, aggravation of pre-existing conditions, disabilities and impairments, loss of enjoyment of lifestyle, loss of mobility, loss of love and affection and loss of society.
Buras and Buffinet are represented by attorney Mark P. Lago of New Orleans.
The case has been assigned to Division F Judge June Berry Darensburg.
