Man who invested in film claims production company defrauded him of $45K

GRETNA – A New Orleans man is suing a Jefferson Parish film production company for defrauding him of tens of thousands of dollars he invested in a film that was never made.

Douglas M. Schmidt filed suit against Katherine Wicks Kennedy, Gary Owen Saslaw and Toothpick Productions LA LLC in the 24th Judicial District Court on May 1. Schmidt claims in 2004 he entered into a contractual agreement with Toothpick Productions LA LLC and Kennedy to purchase 3.5 non-voting shares in the company for $45,000.

The plaintiff alleges that the investment was to go towards the production of the film “What Goes Around” and that his $45,000 would be paid back in addition to 3.5% of the net profits of the film, however, the film was never made and he was allegedly never repaid. Schmidt asserts that the film in fact never existed.

The defendant is accused of breach of contract.

Damages in the amount of $45,000 is sought in addition to consequential damages for mental anguish, aggravation, court costs and judicial interest.

Schmidt is represented by John W. Redmann of Metairie-based Law Office of John W. Redmann LLC.

The case has been assigned to Division M Judge Henry G. Sullivan Jr.
