Sheriff’s Office and deputy sued over car accident

GRETNA – The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office is being sued by a motorist who claims she was struck by a deputy who was driving recklessly.

Mia Briscoe filed suit against the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office and Cory Poche in the 24th Judicial District Court on Feb. 17.

Briscoe asserts she was driving her car north on Avondale Garden Road in Waggaman and was making a left turn into her driveway when Deputy Poche crashed his police cruiser into the front and left side of her car. The plaintiff claims she received severe injuries to her back, neck, wrist and shoulders that have resulted in headaches, sleeplessness, sleep problems and constant pain.

The defendant is accused of traveling at an excessive rate of speed, failing to maintain proper control of vehicle, failing to maintain a proper lookout, being distracted or inattentive, failing to take precautions before striking plaintiff, improper lane usage and failing to yield properly.

An unspecified amount in damages is sought for mental pain and suffering, physical pain and suffering, medical expenses, inconvenience, lost wages and benefits, loss of earning capacity, loss of enjoyment of life and permanent disability.

Briscoe is represented by J. Benjamin Avin of the New Orleans-based Irpino Law Firm.

The case has been assigned to Division D Judge Scott U. Schlegel.
