NEW ORLEANS – A local woman is suing Tulane University Hospital after contracting an infectious disease from a blood transfusion.
University Healthcare System, also known as Tulane University Hospital & Clinic, filed a petition for discovery in the Orleans Parish Civil District Court on Jan. 23 in reaction to a review of medical malpractice claim requested by Peggy Griffin.
According to the Medical Panel Review, on Dec. 31, 2012, Griffin was a patient at Tulane and underwent a transfusion of blood platelets, provided by a currently unidentified blood bank. It was later learned that the blood platelets were contaminated with Strep pneumoniac which caused Griffin to become septic, be admitted to the ICU and undergo additional and otherwise unnecessary medical treatment, the suit claims.
It further alleges that Tulane was negligent and failed to follow the applicable standard of care in obtaining, inspecting, protecting from contamination and providing proper blood products to its patients.
