NEW ORLEANS – The mother of a New Orleans high school student is suing his school as well as the Orleans Parish School Board after her son was allegedly shocked while plugging in a laptop.
Lakeisha Monique Smith, on behalf of her son, filed suit against McDonogh #35 High School and Orleans Parish School Board in the Orleans Parish Civil District Court on Dec. 16, 2014.
Smith asserts that on Dec. 16, 2013, her 16-year-old son was plugging his laptop into a classroom electrical outlet when he unexpectedly suffered an electric shock. The plaintiff claims that her son suffered serious personal injury as a result of the incident.
She claims the school was negligent for creating a hazardous condition on the campus and failing to properly inspect and maintain the premises safely. Additionally, the plaintiff claims that the school should have known of the hazardous condition and of the unreasonable risk of harm it created.
The plaintiff seeks an unspecified amount in damages for personal injuries, medical treatments, pain and suffering and mental anguish.
The plaintiff is represented by Arthur O. Schott III of New Orleans-based Riguer Silva LLC.
This case has been assigned to Division L Judge Kern A. Reese.
