Spectator sues alleging injury in slip on ice water poured on coach after volleyball victory

Jefferson parish school board

GRETNA – An audience member at a volleyball game is suing after she was allegedly injured in a slip and fall on ice water that had been poured on a coach in a victory celebration.

Thetius Sanders filed suit against Jefferson Parish School Board and Ace American Insurance Company in the 24th Judicial District Court on Feb. 13.

Sanders claims that on Sept. 24, 2014 she was watching a volleyball game at West Jefferson High School located at 2200 8th St. in Harvey when the West Jefferson players dumped ice water on their coach in celebrating a win. The plaintiff alleges that no one cleaned up the ice water on the floor and that as she was leaving the gym she slipped on the water and fell to the floor.  Sanders contends she was severely injured in the incident.

The defendant is accused of failing to maintain reasonably safe practices, failing to clean up ice water, failing to warn others of the ice water, failing to exercise reasonable vigilance, failing to properly train employees, failing to exercise diligence in learning of hazardous conditions and failing to prevent people from entering the area where the ice water had been spilled.

An unspecified amount in damages is sought for mental pain and suffering, medical expenses, loss of enjoyment of life, loss of wages and loss of earning capacity.

Sanders is represented by Michael J. Begoun of New Orleans-based Wolfe, Begoun & Pick LLC.

The case has been assigned to Division J Judge Stephen C. Grefer.

Case no. 746-765.
