Tutor alleges Tulane failed to pay overtime

Late 06

NEW ORLEANS — A tutor is suing Tulane, alleging the university has failed to pay its employees overtime wages.

Christopher England of New Orleans, individually and on behalf of other similarly situated employees, filed a class action lawsuit April 14 in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana against Tulane University, alleging violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act and wrongful termination.

According to the complaint, between 2012 and 2015, England, who met Tulane's definition of a full-time employee, did not receive any overtime payment for hours worked in excess of 40 per week. The suit says Tulane denied England benefits, instructed him not to clock in and then terminated him.

The plaintiff alleges Tulane failed to pay the appropriate overtime rate for time worked more than 40 hours per week, failed to keep accurate time records and failed to offer these benefits, despite England's inquiries.

England seeks a trial by jury, compensation for unpaid overtime wages, liquidated damages, prejudgment interest, attorney fees and costs, plus such further relief the court deems just and equitable. He is represented by attorney Laura L. Catlett of New Orleans.
