Kambanos owners file suit against Proteas operators over alleged negligence

Cargo ship 08

NEW ORLEANS – The owners of a vessel allege it was damaged by another vessel while docked.

Ice Hawk Corp. SA and Goulandris Bros. LTD filed a complaint on May 25 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana against Laskaridis Shipping Co. LTD Lavinia Corp., Xebec SA and the vessel Proteas alleging that they negligently and carelessly assigned an inadequate and incompetent crew to the vessel.

According to the complaint, the plaintiffs allege that on May 23, 2016, while Kambanos was safely and properly anchored in the Mississippi River it was struck by the Proteas, causing damage to the Kambanos. The suit states the damage is presently estimated to be at least in the $600,000 range. The plaintiffs holds Laskaridis Shipping Co. LTD Lavinia Corp., Xebec SA and the Proteas responsible because the defendants allegedly negligently failed to do what should have been done to avoid collision and failed to keep a proper lookout, both visually and on radar.

The plaintiffs request a trial by jury and seek judgment against the defendants for the cost of damages, plus interest, attorney's fees, costs and expenses and for such other and further relief as may be just and equitable under the circumstances. They are represented by Michael M. Butterworth, Gary A. Hemphill and Adam N. Davis of Phelps Dunvar LLP in New Orleans.
