NEW ORLEANS — A Mississippi tankerman is suing a maritime company, alleging its negligence led to his injuries.

Darren Cooper of Houston, Mississippi, filed a lawsuit June 8 in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana against Kirby Inland Marine LP, alleging negligence in that the employer failed to provide a seaworthy vessel.

According to the complaint, on June 8, 2013, while Cooper was working aboard M/V Athena, he sustained severe and disabling injuries, including carpal tunnel syndrome and other nerve damages, injuries to his bones, muscles and joints, organs and tissues, plus medical expenses.

The plaintiff alleges Kirby Inland failed to provide a safe place to work, failed to warn, failed to exercise reasonable care in discovering and correcting any and all unsafe conditions existing on the vessel, failed to provide Kirby with the proper equipment and/or personnel to accomplish his job and failed to provide prompt and adequate medical care.

Cooper seeks a trial by jury, compensatory damages, legal costs and exemplary/punitive damages, pre-judgment interest, attorney fees, and any other relief which the law and justice provide. He is represented by attorneys David C. Whitmore and Lawrence Blake Jones of Scheuermann & Jones LLC in New Orleans.
