Business manager accuses UPS of wrongful termination

BATON ROUGE — A longtime employee is suing UPS, alleging it willfully disregarded his federally protected rights.

Darin Williams filed a lawsuit July 5 in U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Louisiana against United Parcel Service Inc. and Sharya Williams, alleging defamation and discrimination.

According to the complaint, Darin Williams, who had worked 18 years at UPS, was unlawfully discriminated against during his short-term disability leave Oct. 6-Nov. 23, 2015, after UPS had incorrectly reported an injury to OSHA. 

As a result of defendants' actions, the suit says, Darin Williams was caused to suffer loss of income, emotional distress, mental anguish and injury to his reputation. The plaintiff alleges Shraya Williams made false and defamatory statements against him, while UPS terminated his employment and rejected a peer committee’s recommendation to allow Williams to return to work.

Darin Williams seeks a trial by jury, all damages, interest, legal costs and all other equitable relief. He is represented by attorney Scott D. Wilson of Baton Rouge.
