NEW ORLEANS — A marine crew member has filed suit against the company that owns a shrimping vessel for allegedly failing to create a safe work environment.
Farrell Dwayne Barnett filed a complaint Oct. 6 in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana against Gollott Trawler LLC, alleging that the shrimping vessel failed to provide a seaworthy vessel.
According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that on Nov. 2, 2015, he sustained severe and permanently disabling injuries when he fell approximately nine feet to the steel vessel deck, resulting in physical and mental pain, disability, loss of earning capacity and medical expenses. The plaintiff holds Gollott Trawler LLC responsible because the defendant allegedly failed to provide a safe place to work and failed to authorize and pay necessary medical treatment, including surgery.
The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks compensation for damages, punitive damages, plus interest, attorneys’ fees and for any additional relief to which he may be entitled. He is represented by Paul M. Sterbcow and Ian F. Taylor of Lewis, Kullman, Sterbcow & Abramson in New Orleans.
