Medical malpractice 08

NEW ORLEANS – A Hawaii couple alleges a doctor at a New Orleans hospital did not take adequate measures to prevent a Georgia man's suicide.

Jeffrey Newsome and Kathleen Newsome, individually and on behalf of Nicholas M. Newsome, filed a suit against Joseph Marnin Kanter M.D. in the Orleans Parish Civil District Court on Sept. 29.

According to the claim, Nicholas M. Newsome was admitted to the emergency department of Interim LSU Hospital on April 18, 2015, and was seen by the defendant. The suit states that Nicholas M. Newsome was intoxicated at the time and had a history of suicidal ideations. The suit states that he was released by the defendant, but after being released took his own life.

The defendant is accused of negligence and breaching standard of care for not referring Nicholas M. Newsome to a psychiatric evaluation.

The plaintiffs are seeking an unspecified amount in damages. They are represented by Scott R. Bickford and Jason Z. Landry of Martzell, Bickford & Centola in New Orleans.

The case has been assigned to Division B Judge Regina Bartholomew Woods.
