Woman alleges malpractice caused father's death

Medical malpractice 02

NEW ORLEANS – A woman claims that an improperly treated urinary tract infection caused her father's death.

Alison Taylor, individually and on behalf of her deceased father, Francis P. DeGruy Sr., filed a suit against Total Health Services LLC and Dr. Nicholas J. Angelica in the Orleans Parish Civil District Court on Nov. 7.

According to the claim, the plaintiff's father was taken to LSU Hospital on Aug. 22, 2014, when he was found to have sepsis from a urinary tract infection and other issues. The suit states that despite being treated, the man died on Aug. 28, 2014. The suit further states DeGruy's home health aide, employed by Total Health Services, notified Angelica of the infection on Aug. 6, 2014, and that Angelica ordered antibiotics that the infection was resistant to.

The defendants are accused of medical malpractice and wrongful death.

The plaintiff is seeking an unspecified amount in damages. The plaintiff is represented by Todd R. Slack of Huber, Slack, Thomas & Marcelle in New Orleans.

The case has been assigned to Division G Judge Robin M. Giarrusso.
